Notes on Framing a painting: Mat size

How to choose the right size mat for a painting

This is the first in an ongoing series on how to decide on a frame and a mat for your artwork.

Many on the paintings created at Spertus Studios are on Yupo paper, which is a kind of watercolor paper. It can be either mounted like a canvas, or nicely framed and matted.

Some of the challenges that one is faced with are:

What color of frame?

What style of molding?

What color mat?

What size of mat?

We will be showing you several options, with artist commentary. Just remember, the most important consideration is personal preference, meaning YOUR preference. There is no wrong way to frame it.

We would love to hear your feedback. Do you agree? Disagree? Or have other thoughts on mat size?

Do you have other burning art questions that you would like us to address?
